3 Keys to Getting a Big Road Win Today

The Badgers have been frustrating to say the least so far this season, but could Wisconsin erase those bad tastes we all have in our mouth and save their season today in West Lafayette. 

The Badgers have dominated Purdue over the past four meetings, however you can throw all those trends out the window for today’s game.  This Badger team has issues, some of those issues showed some improvement in the 4th Quarter last week, but will the signs of life in last week’s 4th quarter be a sign of things to come or will UW continue to play inconsistent football?  That is the million dollar question surrounding this team, and after what I’ve seen so far this year I don’t have a good feeling about this road game today.  I’m still trying to get my prediction for the game ready…  Part of me feels UW will carry last week’s fourth quarter over and get a big road win, but the other part of me is reminded of the Nebraska 2nd Half, the Oregon St game, and many other bad stretches we’ve all seen this season. 

Here are the 3 Keys to victory for Wisconsin today:  1. “Don’t let Bret decide the out come”  what this means is in order to win today UW needs to get up early and stay up, Bret has showing his decision making in big road games can’t be trusted, he will make some bad decisions but if Wisconsin can establish a lead early it will go a long way to getting a “W” despite Bret’s 2nd half mental lapses! 2. “Carry last week’s performance in the 4th quarter over and play a complete game”  if the Badgers are going to win today and make something out of this season the Badgers need to start playing a complete game from start to finish, if UW can play a full game the way they played in the 4th quarter last week Wisconsin could still make a run at another Rose Bowl trip!  3.  “Melvin Gordon sighting”  Melvin Gordon has shown to this point he’s the most explosive player on the Badgers and in order to get a W today Coach Canada needs to make Gordon a bigger part of the offense.  Gordon is averaging almost 10 yards every time he touches the ball, compare that to Ball and White who are both in the 4 ypc range!  Gordon can be a difference maker and it’s time he’s given the chance to show more of game breaking type runs!

Statements from University of Wisconsin Athletics on Joe Paterno

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez and UW football coach Bret Bielema issued the following statements on the passing of former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

 Statement from Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez:

“Today is a sad day. Joe made a difference. He impacted a lot of people. He made a difference in a community, in a college and in college football. He was truly special and an icon. For someone to continue to do what he did through different generations and for such a long period of time and be effective was amazing. I’ve considered Joe a friend and a mentor. This is sad day for college football and the Penn State community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and the Paterno family.”

 

Statement from Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema:

“Coach Paterno obviously did so many wonderful things for a number of years, not only with the success of his teams on the field but the number of lives he shaped. I hope people remember his lifetime achievements. From day one, when I joined the head coaching ranks and was fortunate enough to cross paths with him at coaches meetings and various functions, he was always very engaging and complimentary of the way we did things at Wisconsin and how we played. I enjoyed competing with him at every level. Our Badger football family sends our condolences and deepest sympathies to the Penn State community and the Paterno family.”

Wisconsin’s 1st Road Win, Shutout of the Season in 4-0 Victory

Zengerle extends scoring streak to 20 games with goal and assist at Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. – Wisconsin’s 4-0 victory over Minnesota State on Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Center provided more significance than two much-needed points in the WCHA standings. The Badgers (10-9-2, 5-8-2 WCHA) leave with their first road win of the season, their first record above .500, their first shutout and a forward on the cusp of a long-held school record.

 Sophomore center Mark Zengerle (Rochester, N.Y.) scored a point   for the 20th consecutive game at 11:09 of the first period to provide  all the offense the Badgers needed. His ninth goal of the season came after freshman defenseman Jake McCabe (Eau Claire, Wis.) took the scenic route around an MSU defender via the corner of the offensive zone and found Zengerle alone in front for the finish.

The goal followed stellar play in net by freshman goaltender Joel Rumpel (Swift Current, Saskatchewan), who made a handful of big saves through the first 10 minutes to keep the game scoreless. Rumpel would eventually finish with 36 saves for his first career shutout, becoming the Badgers’ first rookie to blank an opponent since Shane Connelly did the same at Michigan Tech on Feb. 17, 2005.

Rumpel improved to 7-4-2 overall and 4-4-2 in WCHA action. Sophomore forward Jefferson Dahl (Eau Claire, Wis.) got Rumpel and the Badgers early insurance with his fourth tally of the season at 18:37 of the first stanza. Brothers Ryan and Sean Little (Fond du Lac, Wis.) set up the play, with Ryan playing his first contest since Nov. 19 and Sean collecting his first point of the season and second of his career.

A second-period goal by freshman forward Matt Paape (Appleton, Wis.) and a third-period power-play tally by Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) on a sharp-angle one-timer finished the scoring for the night. Badger special teams continued their solid play of late on the power play, going 1-for-3 and on the penalty kill, a perfect 5-for-5 on the night.

Wisconsin goes for its second consecutive sweep with a rematch against the Mavericks Saturday at 7 p.m. The game airs live on Charter Extra 87 in Wisconsin and on the radio at WIBA-AM 1310, with free streaming audio online at BadgerSportsNetwork.com.

Freshman George Marshall will Redshirt

MADISON, Wis. — Freshman guard George Marshall announced on Wednesday his intention to redshirt the 2011-12 season for the Wisconsin men’s basketball team.

“I just looked at this season and came to the conclusion that a fifth year in this program will be more    beneficial than what is potentially a season with limited minutes,” George said prior to Wisconsin’s game  vs. Colgate. “I asked myself if it was worth playing this season, when I could possibly be playing a lot of  minutes as a fifth-year senior.”

“This is a great opportunity for George to have a one-year internship under arguably the best point  guard in the country,” associate head coach Greg Gard said Wednesday. “He can learn from that and at the same time know that he’ll be better physically and fundamentally as a player at 22 or 23 years old than he is as at 19. That extra year at the back end of his career can really turn into something special.”

A native of Chicago, Ill., Marshall is one of five freshmen on the Badgers’ roster. He will continue to practice with his teammates this season and will play as a redshirt freshman for the Badgers in 2012-13.

“I’ve talked to some of the assistant coaches and Ryan Evans about the decision,” Marshall added. “Ryan definitely suggested it and he said he’s really happy he redshirted and it helped him a lot. I’m confident that I could compete for minutes this season, but this just gives me another year to prove it.”

“He can definitely play at this level,” Gard said. “The experience that he’s getting going against Jordan Taylor every day in practice – and those are some battles – will be worth as much game experience as he would get this season. He has to use that to his advantage and he understands that.  The unsure amount of minutes he would have played this season are being invested and put into the bank, so to speak, and they’re gaining interest. He’ll take those out in his fifth year knowing that he’ll have an opportunity to play a lot of minutes as a senior.”

The No. 14-ranked Badgers take on Colgate Wednesday night at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Kohl Center. The game will be carried live on ESPN3.com.
